Industry Overview
The UK construction industry is growing and changing, driven by substantial investment, rising construction costs and increasingly stringent sustainability requirements. The MEP engineering sector is busy as a result. Building Information Modeling (BIM) and smart building technologies are behind much of that growth, and they make engineering solutions more efficient and more accurate. So the MEP work, and the choice of MEP partner, is worth getting right. The UK construction industry has grown since AMF MEP started. The Office for National Statistics (ONS) reports that the sector contributed approximately £113 billion to the UK economy in 2022, about 6% of total GDP. That growth comes with rising construction costs: some areas of the industry have seen declines whilst others, such as repair and maintenance, have continued to increase. The Construction Products Association (CPA) noted that material costs increased by over 20% in 2022, with labour costs also on the rise. A downturn in one area tends to push work into another, such as maintenance, so the need for cost-effective, efficient and reliable MEP services is constant. AMF MEP was founded to meet the legal, national and local ambitions of the construction industry in the UK and Ireland. Sustainability, for instance, is now a requirement in UK construction rather than a preference. The UK government has set targets to reduce carbon emissions by 68% by 2030 compared to 1990 levels, with a goal of net-zero emissions by 2050. The construction sector accounts for nearly 40% of the UK’s carbon footprint, so those targets cannot be met without it.
