A net zero carbon building reduces its emissions as far as practicable through efficient design and renewable energy, with any residual emissions balanced through recognised offsetting. Our holistic approach evaluates energy use, renewable energy opportunities and carbon offsetting strategies to chart that route for each project, grounded in the rigorous application of building physics rather than headline claims.

A strategy only counts if it survives contact with the delivered design, so we carry ours through as the MEP engineers. On current London schemes that means all-electric ambient-loop heat networks fed by air source heat pumps with no gas on site at Cyprus Beckton and Orion Park, a district heat network connection at Selby Urban Village, and rooftop solar PV sized scheme by scheme, from 46 kWp at Orion Park to around 229 kWp at Selby. The result at Selby is homes designed to a 91% regulated-carbon saving against Part L 2021.

What is a net zero carbon building?

A net zero carbon building is one whose greenhouse gas emissions are reduced as far as practicable through efficient design and renewable energy, with any residual emissions balanced through recognised offsetting. The UK's commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050 puts the built environment under increasing pressure to decarbonise, which is why credible, evidenced strategies matter.

What does a net zero energy strategy actually involve?

It starts with a Net Zero Carbon Assessment that evaluates the project's energy use, renewable energy opportunities and carbon offsetting options, then sets the engineering path: fabric and services efficiency, low-carbon heat such as heat pumps or a district heating connection, and on-site renewables like solar PV. We then develop the MEP design so the strategy is delivered, not shelved.

How close to net zero can a residential scheme get today?

Very close on regulated carbon, using technology available now. Selby Urban Village is designed to a 91% regulated-carbon saving against Part L 2021 through a district heat network connection, MVHR throughout and around 229 kWp of solar PV, while Cyprus Beckton and Orion Park both run all-electric with no gas on site. These are live schemes in delivery, not concept studies.
